The Sportsman's lodge : about us

Bigelow was incorporated as a town in 1868 and finally in 1871 the first school was built and the first teacher was L.A. Knowles. This frame building remained as a school until 1889 when a contract was set for the building of a new brick school in the late summer. (contractor information). It was completed and opened its doors following the Christmas vacation in 1889.

Come stay in the present but surrounded with the past! The Original Sportsman's Lodge was Consolidated District No. 2 School House, built in 1916 in the town of Bigelow, MO. In 1954 Georgia Stone and her husband purchased the lodge and turned it into a Hunter's Paradise. Hunter's from all over came to stay at the lodge and among them were baseball players, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Hank Bauer with the New York Yankees. Also, Ted Williams, of the Boston Red Sox, whose favorite past time was hunting and fishing! Let's not forget the infamous, Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle, known for his World War II "Doolittle Raid" on Japan. Now the lodge is being resurrected again to bring you that "Old School Appeal with a Modern Feel!" Come enjoy all that Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge has to offer and spend some time at The Sportsman's Lodge. We have food and drink along with events and activities at the Lodge. Don't miss out!
